Get on the air
Become a Ham
Amateur radio brings together people of all ages and walks of life — in clubs, at events, and in service to the community. The common thread? An enjoyment of communicating with others using ham radio.
Your path to your callsign
Getting your Technician (entry-level) license is easier than you'd think. Most people study for a few weeks and pass a 35-question multiple choice exam.
- 1
Learn the basics
Start with the ARRL's introduction to amateur radio, then dig into a study guide or video series in a style that works for you.
- 2
Practice the exam
Use a free online practice exam until you're consistently scoring above passing — usually 26 out of 35.
- 3
Take the exam
Sit for an in-person or remote exam session. Once you pass, the FCC will issue your callsign — usually within a few business days.
